COLUMBUS, Ohio — The group protesting a
casino in the Arena District said Monday that it is prepared to
throw support behind another casino location, if that part of town
is open to the idea.
Stand Up Columbus has called on developer Penn National Gaming to
consider other locations for its casino.
"Our (belief) is the Arena District is no place for a casino,"
said Lisa Griffen with Stand Up Columbus, "but that doesn't mean
we're anti-casino."
Penn National is considering other potential locations, and
Griffen's group is prepared to toss in its support.
"If any of the four sites are ultimately selected, and it
includes community input and acceptance, then Stand Up Columbus
would stand up with that neighborhood to bring the casino to
Columbus," Griffen said.
The group said residents and businesses in the Hilltop have
already called on it to help bring a casino to their area, Mallett
reported.
"Even though on a moral issue I am opposed to a casino, as far as
providing jobs, I think it would be a good thing," said west side
resident Christine Mulk.
Of the four possible locations, two are located on the city's
west side, including the old Westland Mall, located at West Broad
Street and Interstate 70, and the nearby Delphi Corporation Plant,
located on Georgesville Road.
Other mentioned sites include vacant Cooper Stadium in
Franklinton, and a parcel of land on the city's north side, near
Polaris Parkway and Interstate 71.
The Greater Hilltop Area Commission is prepared to take measures
to get the casino if the community gives its support, Mallett
reported.
The council will discuss the matter during a meeting Tuesday at 7
p.m. at the Hilltop Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library,
located on Hague Avenue.
