An estimated 100 million alcoholic drinks are consumed each year in Las Vegas. With demand like that, you may think bartenders are a dime a dozen, and the jobs are just waiting to be filled.

But think again: Bartending is one of the most competitive jobs in this 24-hour party town. Hotel-casinos want the people serving their guests - their gamblers - to be the cream of the crop. And those who make it to the top are rewarded with a career than can be exciting, glamorous and lucrative, for those who don't mind the hard work, long hours and dependence on tips. Bartender in Las Vegas is probably one of the prime jobs in town.

That's why even an experienced bartender making the jump to the Las Vegas hotel-casino market will likely start out in an entry-level position, then work his or her way up.

The next step is bar back - essentially, a bartender's assistant. In addition to maintenance work such as stocking, cleaning and getting ice, bar backs may step in during slower times to learn from the bartender and sling a few drinks themselves, like an apprentice.
